Wardens of the Fantastical Menagerie
A long time ago, a great king commissioned the construction of a great garden. It stretched for many many miles in every direction and featured dozens of environments and features. The king began shipping in the most peculiar beasts that roamed the continent. Large and small, placid and ferocious, all found a home within the walls of the great park. As time went by he contacted mighty wizards, accomplished scientists, well-travelled heroes, and bid them create fantastical environments that he might use to house even more fantastical creatures. Soon there was a great dungeon beneath the many planes, patches of magically created frozen ice, several lakes and swamps, and towers growing towards the sky at regular intervals. The Garden, as it came to be known, became one of the great wonders of the ancient world. Then everyone went to war, as was the custom of the time, and The Garden fell into ruin.
Now it has been reconstructed. The current leader of the land, Prince Prospero, inherited The Garden when he was crowned and it has been his obsession ever since. Though it is but a shadow of its former self, Prospero has made no secret of the fact he continues to expand it.
